The National Human Rights Commission has expressed concern over the
protest by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) urging them to eschew violence and conduct themselves in an orderly manner.
The Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission Mrs. Oti Ovrawahstated this while reacting to the protest by the group which turned violent and disrupted peace in some parts of the FCT earlier in the
week.
Mrs. Ovrawah stated that even though the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and other International Human Rights Law which Nigeria is a party guarantees right to peaceful protest, the
government owes its citizens a responsibility to restore law and order
if such peaceful protests turn violent.
She therefore called on the government to take a consolidated view on all issues generating tension in the country so as to ensure respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms of all affected persons
including Sheik El Zak Zaki and his wife.
Mrs ovrawah recalled that the Commission had on several occasions responded to the peaceful protest and petitions of members of the IMN and also made necessary recommendations to the appropriate
authorities.
