Developing Alternative Domestic Energy

Disturbed by the high rate of deaths and health hazards caused by smoke from the use of firewood for cooking, the International Centre for Energy, Environment and Development, partnering with the Energy Commission of Nigeria and the Global Alliance for Clean Cook Stoves are proferring this new direction which is expected to enhance efficiency of energy use while also addressing health, poverty and environmental challenges.
Other concerns raised are that of geometric population growth and the attendant threat of desert encroachment due to deforestation. The target is to provide a few million Nigerians with clean cook stoves by the year 2020. Participants say adequate regulations and standardisation of products are important to drive the initiative.
