The North Central office of the National Human Right Commission (NHRC) has donated relief materials to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at a camp in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau.

Mrs Grace Pam, the commission’s Zonal Coordinator in the zone, while presenting the items on Wednesday, said the gesture was to alleviate the sufferings of the affected persons.

She said the items donated were contributed by the personnel of the commission in the zone.

“The recent happenings in Plateau are no longer news to us. We know that villages were attacked, many killed and thousands were displaced.

“No doubt, the displaced persons will always need to be supported so as to have at least a better life.

“This is why we  members of staff of the north central office of this commission decided to donate from our personal purse to support the IDPs.

“These items cannot be equated with their lost, but it will go a long way to cushion their hardships’’, she said.

Pam called on government to intensify efforts in ensuring that the displaced persons returned to their original homes.

Receiving the items, Mr Mawakson Choji, the camp coordinator, commended the commission for remembering the displaced persons in the state and assured that the items donated would be equitably distributed.

Choji, however, lamented that government’s assistance to the displaced had been poor, and called on it to do more.

He also urged government to beef up security in the affected areas, to enable the displaced to return home.

“We are itching to go back to our homes and so, we call on government to deploy more security personnel to the affected areas’’, Choji said.

NAN reports that the items donated include, rolls of slippers, toilet papers, sanitary pads, body cream, carton of seasoning, and bags of used clothes, among others.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports also that over 7, 000 displaced persons, mostly women and children are taking refuge in the camp. (NAN)
