World Hijab Day: FOMWAN Condemns Harassment of Muslim Women Wearing Hijab
The Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN) on Thursday condemned those harassing Muslim women wearing the Hijab.
Mrs Mairo Sani, the FOMWAN Leader in Plateau made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on the 2018 World Hijab Day.
The official stressed that the use of Hijab by female Muslims was ordained by Allah, and “Prophet Muhammad also instructed Muslim women to cover their body to remain modest.’’
She said those harassing Muslim women wearing Hijab were only out to portray Islam in bad light.
Mrs Sani noted that Muslim women were being subjected to discrimination, harassment and ridicule by those bent on suppressing it under the satanic notion that it was an oppressive practice.
The FOMWAN official, therefore, called for accommodation and tolerance of all religious practices including women using Hijab.
“We are one and the same with the Roman Catholic sisters who wear head coverings in form of Hijab. Some Jewish cultures also practice it,’’ she noted.
Mrs Sani disclosed that the association would hold a public lecture on Feb. 4 to educate Muslim women in the state on the significance of Hijab.
Sani advised Muslim women wearing Hijab to always submit themselves to security checks whenever the need arises, as it was mandatory on Muslims to obey the law.
According to her, the 2018 World Hijab Day, with the theme “My Hijab, My Pride”, is meant to encourage Muslim women to be confident in using the Hijab in public places.
The FOMWAN official condemned what she termed as the unconstitutional enforcement of certain dress codes by organisations and professional bodies which infringed the rights of Muslim women.
NAN recalls the case of Miss Firdaus Amasa, a law graduate who in October 2017, was disallowed from being called to the bar at the Nigerian Law School for wearing a headscarf.
The House of Representative has fixed Feb. 6, for public hearing on the matter.
The World Hijab Day, celebrated on Feb. 1 annually, was spearheaded in 2013 by Nazma Khan to foster religious tolerance and understanding. (NAN)
