Senate Rejects Four Remuneration Bill

Apart from making democracy attractive and entrenching good governance, the bill also seeks to reduce corruption in the system and discourage military coups. While the bill was passed three times in the past by the National Assembly, the vital Presidential accent could not be secured due to what the sponsor, Senator Nduma-Egba called inexplicable reasons. Debate on the general principles of the bill by Senators virtually centered on the provision that seeks to include former military leaders of the country as beneficiaries.

The bill by Senator Joshua Lidani seeking to establish the Nigerian Merchant Navy Security and Safety Corps which was also facing imminent rejection was withdrawn by the sponsor. However, Senator Iye Enang’s bill for an Act to amend the Motor Vehicle Prohibition of Tinted Glass was unanimously supported for second reading by the lawmakers.

In the meantime, the Senate received the annual report from the Auditor General of the Federation containing audit reports of some Federal Government Parastatals from 2005 – 2010. The Senate resumes plenary on Thursday.
