The Edo Government has called on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to engage in proper enlightenment and advocacy to reduce incidences of human rights violations in the country.

Edo Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shaibu gave the charge on Thursday in Benin when he hosted the management of the state National Human Rights Commission in Government House, Benin.

Shaibu tasked the commission to ensure every individual know the limits of their rights for them not to also infringe on people’s rights while trying to enforce theirs.

He expressed displeasure over the attitude of people who now abuse social media to infringe on people’s rights instead of exploring its networking benefits for economic empowerment.

Shaibu said that it’s the responsibility of government to ensure that lives and properties of the citizens are protected, adding that the Gov. Godwin Obaseki-led administration would partner the commission to protect citizens’ rights.

Earlier, the Acting Chairman of National Human Rights Commission in Edo, Mr Nicholas Osadolor praised the state government for putting up policies which promotes human rights as well as ensuring safety of her citizens.

Osadolor said that the commission would continue to demonstrate an expansive capacity in tackling issues of human rights, through various activities such as public enlightenment and peace building programmes. (NAN)
