NiMet Boss Elected into WMO Council
Prof. Sani Mashi, the Director-General of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has been elected as member of the Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
A statement by Mr Muntari Ibrahim, NiMet’s General Manager, Public Relations, on Friday in Abuja, stated that “Mashi is also Nigeria’s permanent representative at the WMO.”
Ibrahim noted that the NiMet boss was elected at the ongoing 70th Executive Council Session (EC70) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
He added that Mashi’s membership of the revered council would provide an opportunity for Nigeria to access first hand knowledge of current global issues and apply same into its situation.
According to him, it will also strengthen multi-lateral and bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and other countries on weather, climate, water, environment and sustainable development issues.
“Nigeria’s membership, which is for four years, will also enable NiMet to strengthen its existing relationship with research and development communities worldwide,” he said.
WMO is a specialised agency of the UN for weather and climate, operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences comprising 192 members.
It is charged with the responsibility of formulating policies, scrutinise programmes and give directions on all matters of meteorology.
The council has 37 members with nine from Africa, representing the 192 members of the WMO.
Nigeria is the only Anglophone country representing West Africa on the Executive Council. (NAN)
