FRSC Sensitises RCCG Church Members on Road Safety Measures
(NAN) Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Sunday took their sensitisation campaign to a congregation of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) where they counseled members on safety measures against accidents on Nigerian roads.
Emma Fekoya, Assistant Corps Commander, told members of the RCCG Province 12, Baruwa Gate, Lagos that safety campaigns to churches, mosques, parks and schools have yielded positive results in minimising road accidents.
Fekoya, Unit Commander RS2.18 Ikeja, said: “Enforcement is not the only way to achieve our objectives.
“Sensitisations like this have given us huge results, that is why we are doing it now in churches, parks, schools and other public places.”
The FRSC official said road users, whether pedestrians or drivers, could not afford to be ignorant or display bad attitude which were major causes of accidents.
Drivers must be conversant and comply with all the rules written in the Nigerian Highway Code, she said.
“We should not be ignorant in this jet age because ignorance is now a choice, even the bible says `my people perish for lack of knowledge’.
“We should also apply wisdom while driving or walking along the road to stay safe.
“Parents are expected to keep their children at the inner part of the road while walking to guide against being run down by motorcycles or cars.
“Know your eye status as a driver.
“Also, you must know that changing flat tyres on the highway can be dangerous without your safety materials,’’ Fekoya counseled.
She warned passengers in commercial buses or on motorcycles not to be engrossed with their phones, saying that many had been taken to wrong destinations because of that.
The FRSC official counseled drivers not to use phones even with hands-free while in transit, adding that pedestrians should not use phones while walking on the streets.
She said that many Nigerians exhibited bad attitude by not using the pedestrian walkway when crossing the road, adding that this could guard against accidents.
“Seat belts are meant to hold the driver whenever there is a sudden halt because failure can cause internal injury, bleeding and more.
“There is no wisdom in contending with a truck trying to make a sharp bend, as the truck can lose control in the process thereby causing serious accident,’’ the FRSC official said.
She urged Nigerians to always have their reflective jackets on whenever they were going out at night to be visible in case a driver had eye defects or faulty headlights.
Fekoya said that the commission decided to come to the church because they knew people would be calm to listen to them, adding that safety was a joint effort. (NAN)
