An Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti on Friday ordered the remand of a 21-year-old man, Sunday Olowoyo, in prison for allegedly being in possession of a pistol.‎

Olowoyo had pleaded not guilty to a charge of unlawfully possessing a pistol.‎

The prosecutor, Sgt. Monica Ikebuilo, told the court that the accused committed the offence ‎on Dec. 28, at 00:30 .a.m., in Ado Ekiti.

Ikebuilo said that the accused and two of his friends were in a car when a police patrol team stopped them, but they opened their car doors and fled.

“The police men in the team shot at the fleeing suspects, but they also shot back at the team during which they hit one of the police men and caused him injury,”‎ she said.

She said that the patrol team in the process arrested the accused and found an English-made ‎pump action in his possession while searching him.

Ikebuilo said the accused and others now at large had conspired to commit armed robbery.‎

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 6(b) and 3(1) of the Robbery and Fire Arms Act.‎

The counsel to the accused, Mr Emmanuel Sunmonu, applied for the bail of his client.

The magistrate, Mrs Dolapo Akosile, declined the application but ordered the remand of the accused in prison pending the receipt of legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

Akosile adjourned the case until Feb. 5 for mention.
