IDP Protection: NHRC/UNHRC Restrategise For 2018

Stakeholders on the implementation of NHRC/UNHRC IDP protection Monitoring Project convened in Yola the capital of  Adamawa State to review the 2017 activities carried out under the project and to plan ahead for 2018 according to Fatimah Agwai, Head media unit Abuja.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission Mrs Oti Ovrawah said the purpose for the meeting was for review of the 2017 project achievements, challenges and lessons learnt, integrate these into project proposal for 2018 with a view to improving project implementation in 2018.
Mrs Ovrawah who was represented by the Deputy Director Protection and Investigation Department, Mr. Harry Obe,  emphasized that the findings from the field, challenges encountered and recommendation proffered by Monitors and Supervisors would help the project to make greater impact on population of concern.

Stakeholders at the meeting include representatives from the UNHCR, the project coordinator, staff of the NHRC, NHRC State Supervisors and IDP Monitors.
Participants unanimously validated the draft report of the IDP protection monitoring project conducted in 2017 and also finalized the proposal document for 2018 project activities.
It would be recalled that in 2017 project year, series of trainings were organized by the NHRC for the Military and other Law Enforcement agencies, MDAs with protection mandates, IDP Monitors and Supervisors.
At the conclusion of the two-day end of project report review and proposal finalization meeting, the project coordinator who is also the Director of Monitoring Department in the NHRC Mr.Tony Ojukwu commended the efforts of UNHCR for their commitment in alleviating the plight of the IDPs in the North East especially as it relates to protection issues. “ We are happy doing what we are doing as it is an opportunity for us to contribute our quota in service to humanity”
Earlier the representative of the UNHCR at the meeting Mr. Marcus Top expressed the strong commitment of the organization to the project.
