Mrs Akeredolu promises to establish Digital Academy in Ondo State

Mrs Betty Akeredolu, the Wife of the Ondo State Governor, has promised to establish a Digital Academy in the state to train boys, girls and mothers on Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Akeredolu made the disclosure on Saturday at the closing ceremony of Solar4girls Naija, at Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State.

She expressed happiness that the `solar girls` had been tutored by experts on different aspects of ICT, and empowered to become very confident in making use of technology.

According to her, the solar4girls Naija initiative is borne out of the need to educate young girls on ICT with a view to enhancing their future development.

‘‘The main objective of educating girls by building solar panels is to bridge the gap between men and women in solar energy sector, with the mission to promoting diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the solar energy industry.

‘‘We all know that women are the energy managers in homes; women manage the energy cooking, heating, lighting, and they care about reducing electricity bills.

‘The training our girls got from this programme on renewable energy and climate change will have ripple effects on our great nation and help in reducing our fossil fuel dependence.

‘‘This initiative is geared toward solving our social problems like epileptic power supply and poor infrastructure; the programme would curb them from growing bigger,’’ she said.

The Chief Operating Officer, Ashadam Solar Limited, Damilola Ashaleye, said solar energy has the potential to reach about 600 million people in Africa who live without reliable electricity.

Ashaleye noted that training had broadened the knowledge of the solar girls, who could now consider opportunities in solar renewable and sustainable energy sector.

The best graduating student for solar4girl, Tolu Ehinmosan, commended the effort of the wife of the governor for the success of programme.
