Update on Collapsed Three-storey Building in Anambra state

Peter Okolie, NAN: An uncompleted twin three-storey hotel at Nkwo-Eziudo market along the Ogidi-Abatete road, Ogidi near Onitsha in Anambra state has collapsed with no case of death or injuries reported.

Residents of the area told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that the incident occurred on Saturday at about 2.30pm when workers had left the construction site.

NAN reports that more than 20 workers are always on site during the work hours

The Ogidi Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr Hassan Musa, told NAN he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

He said that the police would visit the scene and conduct investigations to ascertain the cause of the collapse.

There has been a spike in the number of building collapses in the country with over 20 cases recorded over the last 10 years.

The synagogue building collapse (September 2014), Lekki building collapse (March 2016), The “Titanic” building collapse in Ebute Meta (July 2006), The uncompleted building in Abuja (August 2010) and the Jos school building collapse (September 2014) are some of the incidents recorded.

Others are the Bank of Industry building collapse (March 2006) and the Uyo, Akwa Ibom church collapse where the state Governor Udom Emmanuel were among worshippers that escaped death.
