Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport handled almost 5,000 domestic flights in December alone, making it the second busiest airport in the country. But it will shut down for six weeks from Wednesday, March 8.
The shutdown is expected to cause severe disruption. But the decision has been forced by the increasingly decrepit and dangerous condition of the airport’s sole runway, which has ruptured in several places.

The press release also states that government has also concluded all arrangement for the complimentary transportation of passengers to and from Kaduna as soon as the Abuja airport shuts down operation.

For security reasons however, initial screening of passengers and luggages will be done at the Abuja airport, while the boarding screening will be done at the Kaduna airport. The minister of state aviation appeals for public understanding as the decision to shut down the Abuja airport is in the interest of all.
