World Cancer Day in Nigeria

A report from population-based cancer registries shows that Nigeria currently has one hundred thousand new cases of cancer day every year. This represents twenty percent of cases in Africa and slightly more than half of West Africa.

This worrisome data has given rise to many intervention efforts by government over the years. This year, the country is working on a five year strategic plan for the control of cervical cancer. This is part of Nigeria’s focus as the world cancer day is marked today.

The federal ministry of health says personnel for the plan are being trained with funding from the world health organization and the bill and Melinda gates foundation.

This national strategic plan is expected to significantly slash the cancer burden in the country. Nigeria’s sub theme for this year’s cancer day is ‘ make a healthy lifestyle choice’.

A truly global event taking place every year February, World Cancer Day unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer.

It aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action.

As the world commemorates World Cancer Day, we join hands together with everyone who has felt the blight of this horrible disease. We continue to hope for a cure and pray that this scourge will be eliminated.
