Kebbi State Gov’t Launch Cancer & Sickle Cell Club For all Girls Secondary School

A state wide  has been initiated in Kebbi state. The initiative of the Kebbi state Ministry of Education has the wife of the governor and founder Medicaid Cancer Foundation as its Grand Patron.

A steering committee to chart the path of the club was inaugurated in Kangiwa Local Government Area on Monday 6th February 2017.
The launch was attended by principals of all girls secondary schools, directors from the ministry of Education and Health and relevant NGOs.

Speaking at the occasion the HC Education Alh Magawata described the clubs as a way of starting good practices early to curb the menace of both Cancer and Sickle cell. He used the occasion to draw attention to the unprecedented investments made in the educational sector by the current administration led by Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.

In her remarks Dr Bagudu said as Patron, she will endeavor to attend each club formed’s meeting at least once during the tenure of Gov Atiku Bagudu. She added that if all the clubs achieved was to teach each secondary school girl in Kebbi the practice of self breast examination and also know her genotype, it would be a highly laudable achievement unprecedented in Nigeria. She thanked the initiators of the club for their innovative idea.

The sole administrator Kangiwa Local Government Alh Muhammadu Hamidu
welcomed the entourage alongside his members and other school children. He thanked the Ministry of Education for flagging off the Clubs in in local government.

Educational drama sketches and songs were presented by students on cancer and sickle cell. Awareness lectures on Sickle cell and cancer were given by Dr Sani Kangiwa a consultant Haematologist and Dr Aminu Bunza respectively.

Over 1000 women and girls attended the event where screening and genotype tests were carried out. Each student was presented with a card indicating her genotype.

Earlier in a visit to the palace of the traditional ruler, the Mai arewa of Kangiwa Alh Yusuf Sulaiman called on students to join the club and emulate the governors wife by studying seriously and be contributing members of society in future. He thanked Dr Bagudu for engaging the traditional rulers in the campaign against cancer.
