#AFCON2017: Cote d’Ivoire Coach Resigns
Michel Dussuyer has resigned his appointment as Head Coach of the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire following his team’s early elimination at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon.
The reigning champions were knocked out after losing 0-1 to Morocco in their final Group C match on Tuesday.
The Frenchman’s decision to resign after 18 months in the job was announced by the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF).
The Elephants failed to register a win in Gabon, after draws with Togo and DR Congo and the defeat to the Moroccans.
The federation’s statement praised Dussuyer’s “professionalism, commitment and human quality’’.
“The appropriate measures will be put in place to find his successor,’’ it added.
It would be recalled that Algeria coach Georges Leekens had also resigned following the team’s early exit from the ongoing AFCON.
The Desert Foxes were one of the pre-tournament favourites but were knocked out of the competition after failing to win a game in Gabon.
Leekens who wished the national team success in future assignment said he decided to quit for the good of all.
The 67-year-old Belgian was appointed to the role only in October, for what was his second spell in charge following a four-month stint in 2003.
He had been expected to take Algeria deep into the latter stages at least in Gabon, considering the quality of players in the team including BBC and CAF African Footballer of the Year Riyad Mahrez and his Leicester team-mate Islam Slimani, Porto’s Yacine Brahimi and Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam
