Presentation Of Awards To Winners Of SON Essay Comp. @ Law Students Annual Conf., Makurdi, Benue

“…The threat to our right of life comes from the use of substandard, fake and counterfeited products”. This statement was made by the Director-General of the Standards Organization of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Anthony Aboloma.

Mr. Aboloma, who was represented by Mr. Moor Kumar from the Legal Services Directorate during the Law Students Annual National (LAWSAN) Convention which took place at the Benue State University, Makurdi, said SON has increased its tempo in waging massive campaigns against the use of expired or substandard tyres, LPG Gas cylinders and electrical materials which are life threatening, especially because of the dangers inherent in such products.

In order to prevent such accidents and colossal loss of lives and properties, Mr. Aboloma said SON has continued to engage critical stakeholders through collaborations and advocacy initiatives such as this partnership with LAWSAN.

He said the collaborations with LAWSAN is to enable the Students imbibe the culture of making sure that they not only buy quality products but certified made in Nigerian products.

Mr. Aboloma also called on the Marketers and producers of substandard and fake products to desist from such acts or else the wrath of the law will not only catch up with them but they will be dealt with accordingly.  He called on all and sundry to join forces with SON to eliminate the scourge of substandard products and also expose those engaged in the evil acts of producing and marketing of these substandard products.

Towards achieving this objectives, the SON organised an annual essay competition focusing on the dangers of substandard products. This year’s annual Essay Competition had participants from;

1.    Ahmadu Bello University
2.    University of Maiduguri
3.    Bayero University, Kano
4.    Bauchi State University
5.    Uthman Dan fodio University
6.    Kogi State University
7.    University of Ilorin
8.    Nassarawa State University
9.    Ekiti State University
10.   Ambross Ali University
11.   Imo State University
12.   UNN Nsuka

In the same vein the Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Iorhen Hwande advised the students to pick up careers with SON after their education as the law allows for regulations and enforcement of Standards across board.

Law students from across the federation were in attendance and the LAWSAN convention ended with a road show rally were students and officers of SON walked through major road in Makurdi to sensitize people on the street on the menace of the use of substandard goods.

 WINNERS OF THIS YEAR SON ESSAY
The winners of the essay competition were presented their awards at the Law Student Annual Conference in Makurdi with the following awards.
1.    1st  Prize – Mahaija Mohammed Sulaimon – Bayero University, Kano
2.    2nd Prize – Gbanger Shimasaan – Benue State University
3.    3rd prize – Aliu Toyin  – University of Ilorin.
