ECOWAS Reignites Cooperation with Germany

Germany says it is ready to reignite cooperation with ECOWAS to boost the Nigerian economy

Germany’s minister for foreign affairs Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier says that in its efforts to reignite cooperation with ECOWAS, promised to partner Nigeria in her current efforts to growing the economy and employment generation.

He made the promise when he visited the president of the ECOWAS commission Mr. Marcel de Souza at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Since the beginning of special cooperation between ECOWAS and Germany in 2006, the European giant has been providing support for ECOWAS in the main areas of organizational development, peace and conflict prevention, electoral assistance as well as trade harmonization among others.

President of the ECOWAS commission says high demographic rate is a major cause of poverty and under development within the sub-region.

Speaking through an interpreter, the commission’s president called for prompt sensitization of women before the situation gets out of control.

The German minister for foreign affairs promised enhanced cooperation with Nigeria but lamented the high rate of migration through the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

The ECOWAS commission and the German minister for foreign affairs unanimously agreed to convene an ECOWAS Germany summit as a vital tool towards deepening bilateral relations.
