however, while Nigerians were still grappling with this, the recent faceoff between speaker Yakubu Dogara and embattled Hon Jibrin Abdulmumin following his sack as the chairman of appropriation in the federal house of representatives because of his alleged ‘high handedness and fraudulent acts’ opened up more cankerworms .

Before now, it would be recalled those four months into the 2016 financial year, the Nigerian government did not have an approved budget.

Rather, it was spending funds that have not been appropriated.

With the 2016 budget impasse and the controversial padding analysts believe there is the urgent need for reform of the federal budgeting process in order to improve effectiveness, efficiency, transparency and accountability in public spending.

First and foremost, analysts have gone ahead to recommend that for this to have a smooth sail there should be basic steps.

One step in this direction is to ensure that the budget for a financial year is approved and signed into law by the president before the start of that financial year that is by the 1st of January of the year.

Next proposed change in the budgeting process they believe is for Nigeria to return to the concept of national development planning practiced in the 1960s through early 1980s.

In other words, four-year rolling national development plans (NDP) should replace the MTEF which currently forms the basis of the annual budget.

another  needed change, some analysts say  is to clarify the roles of the legislature and the executive in the budgeting process in both the constitution in order to avoid or minimize tensions and disagreements.as the national assembly continues with its roller coaster ,Nigerians are still hoping for a way forward.

What could this be.

15. Nigeria Today On Human Trafficking 2nd August 2016

Trafficking in persons, especially women and children, is an age-old phenomenon that takes many forms, and affects many victims.

This unfortunate practice is a global menace that has acquired shocking new dimensions.

It is a demand-driven global business worth billions and trading in cheap labour, commercial sex, and other crimes usually using the weak, vulnerable and unsuspecting members of society.

Nigeria is said to have acquired an unenviable reputation as one of the countries infested with many cases of human trafficking.

Trafficked persons particularly women and children exploited in Nigeria are used as domestic workers, factory workers, hawkers, and sex workers among others.

There is however other trafficking cases bordering on migration which are said to be self-induced and voluntary, usually motivated by economic reasons.

Through the national agency for the prohibition of trafficking in persons [naptip], the child rights act and non-governmental organizations, Nigeria has made efforts to curb the menace.

On Nigeria today, we shall examine the efforts to tackle human trafficking in Nigeria.
