Senate President’s Democracy Day Message
senate President Bukola Saraki has commended Nigerians for sustaining democracy in the past 17 years despite the challenges the country has encountered within the period.
His commendation is contained in a statement to commemorate the 2016 democracy day.

The Senate President described democracy as not only the most globally accepted system of government, but also the best solution to the problems confronting a multi-cultural, multi-lingual and multi-religious society like Nigeria.
Saraki said Nigeria’s democracy is fast maturing in the 17 unbroken years as demonstrated with the peaceful change of power from one party to another.

While noting that the nation still has to improve on the conduct of elections in such a manner that the free will of the electorate would be reflected in the results, he called on elected and appointed officials at all levels of government to continue to justify the confidence the people repose in them.

The Senate President said the national assembly would continue to strengthen the electoral laws and other legislations that could build institutional checks against the abuse of the law by individuals and groups.
He urged Nigerians to be more patient with the government, as the entire world is facing challenging times, and that what the country needs to overcome the challenging economic situation is discipline, prudent management of resources and exploration of hitherto neglected areas in creating national wealth.
Bukola Saraki congratulates Nigerians on the occasion of democracy day and solicits continued prayers for the government.

Speaker’s Democracy Message

Meanwhile, the Speaker, House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara has congratulated Nigerians as they mark democracy day and 17 years of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria.

He said this milestone calls for sober reflections on the nation’s achievements and failures as a democracy.

In a statement by his spokesman Turaki Hassan, Dogara said, the house of representatives under his leadership promises to continue to strengthen democratic growth and development by legislating for the needs and aspirations of Nigerians.

Dogara explained that the 2015 general elections that brought the opposition party, shows that the nation’s democracy has come of age.

He believes that as Nigeria faces serious economic challenges as a result of dwindling oil revenues and mismanagement of resources, Nigerians should be hopeful and trust the capacity of the current democratic dispensation for a lasting solution.

The speaker urged Nigerians to wait patiently for the results of the current policies and actions of government, which he believes, will soon begin to yield positive results.

He observed that reversing the trend will not be an easy task but with dedication and patriotism on the part of all Nigerians, as well as good leadership, Nigeria’s democracy would soon begin to deliver on its promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The statement further says that the president, being fully aware of the tough economic challenges facing Nigerians, has directed his focus on the salvaging of the battered economy, stressing that one of such tough but inevitable decisions was the liberalization of the petroleum downstream sector, and the consequent hike in petrol price which led to a call out of workers on a strike by organised labour.
