NLC Strike Update: Ayuba Wabba Faction Calls off Strike

Protests tariff
Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) Strike led by Ayuba Wabba faction over increase in fuel price from N86.50 to N145 which started on 18th May 2016, has been called off. The strike involved participation from members of Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU). No official statement has been released from ASUU to participating members yet.

Analysts believe this strike has been largely ineffective, as participation by workers across the country was below previous strike over subsidy in 2014.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, and the National Union od Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, did not join this strike. Many believe non-involvement of the oil workers was largely responsible for the failure of the strike effort.
Several well meaning Nigerians, including National leader of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, visited the NLC secretariat Abuja on Friday to appeal for shelving of the strike action.

Leadership of the National Assembly also reached out to NLC leadership to suspend the strike, as Subsidy removal was in National interest.Other appeals that have gone to the NLC to shelve the strike came from the leadership of the National Assembly.
