Nigeria Professional Football League week 1 update

The Nigeria Premier League kicked off its new season with fun and excitement as the week one results show some away wins and draw.

Week one results produced four away victories, three draws, and three home wins, producing 17 goals in all.

On Saturday, Plateau United defeated Niger Tornadoes 2-1 at the Rwang Pam stadium in Jos in the only game played on the day to begin on a winning note.

With nine other games on Sunday, the expectation was high ahead of the kick off. Lagos came alive with live premier league football after so many years at the Onikan stadium.

Abia Warriors had taken the lead into the break, thanks to an Ndifreke Effiong strike in the 34th minute, but the home team drew level just seven minutes after the break to end the tie 1-1 to the satisfaction of a sizeable number of teeming fans present.

Kano Pillars had to fight back to beat a strong Enugu Rangers 2-1 at the Sani Abacha stadium in Kano.

In Jos, host Giwa FC lost to visitors Ifeanyi Ubah FC who has Brazilian imports in the team. The game ended 1-0 in favour of Ifeanyi Ubah FC.

Nasarawa United could not contain a Lagos based MFM FC in Abuja, with the Northern team losing 2-1 to ensure the Premier League debutants had a bright start.

Newly christened Rivers United, after merging two home teams, Sharks and Dolphin together, were strong enough to beat defending champions Enyimba 1-0 in Port Harcourt.

Lobi Stars went to Ibadan and beat host Shooting Stars 1-0 at the Adamasingba stadium to continue the woes of 3SC who struggled to survive relegation in the past season.

Heartland and Akwa United played out a 1-1 draw in Owerri, while El Kanemi fell 1-0 to Wikki Tourist in a northern derby.
