NEMA appeals for safety consciousness among Nigerians
Lagos, Sept. 8, 2015 (NAN) The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has appealed for safety consciousness among the populace following the death of three under-aged persons in different circumstances in Lagos on Monday.
The NEMA Coordinator in charge of Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States, Dr Bandele Onimode, made the appeal when he reacted to the incidents in Lagos on Tuesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a six-year-old boy, Isaiah Bamidele, died when two boats collided at Egan in Igando/Ikotun Local Council Development Area.
Eyewitness account said one of the boats was coming from Totowu in Ogun while the later just took off from Egan and late Bamidele was travelling in the boat from Egan.
It was learnt that local divers, recovered the body of the boy shortly after the accident.
Both boats were said to be carrying 17 passengers each, when the accident happened at about 1:20 p.m.
NAN learnt that the family of the deceased had since buried the corpse.
In another development, a 16-year-old boy died in a fire incident in Lekki Area of the state.
The NEMA Public Relations Officer, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, said the fire gutted a duplex at No. 35c Ajiran Road, Agungi, Lekki in Eti-Osa Local Government Area in the early hours of Monday.
The cause of the inferno was not immediately known.
In yet another incident, a 10-year-old girl reportedly fell into a well while playing with her peers at Mafoluku Area of Oshodi.
Farinloye told NAN that men of the Lagos State Fire Service, who quickly responded to a distress call, later recovered the body of the girl.
He said the incident happened at No. 11, Atanda Street, Mafoluku in Oshodi Local Government Area of the state.
Meanwhile, the NEMA coordinator has appealed for safety consciousness among the populace against off season fire outbreaks.
Bandele also advised boat operators to always avoid overloading and embrace the use of life-jackets to minimise loss of lives when accident happens.
According to him, if not for the prompt response by the operators and local divers more lives will have been lost in d mishap.
He praised the National Association of Tourism and Boat Operators of Nigeria (ATBOAN) for carrying out sensitisation campaign among its members. (NAN)
