Senate President Calls For Proactive Efforts To Ensure Free, Fair Elections At The Local Governments

Senate President, David Mark has called for proactive efforts to ensure free and fair elections at the local Governments level as the only way to develop the grass roots.
This was disclosed during the opening of the tenth National Delegates Conference of the forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions in Abuja
The theme of the conference was Local Council Elections in Nigeria; Issues and Perspectives. This is coming at a period when local government elections in Nigeria is perceived with mixed feelings due to what many refer to as undue influence by some state governors. Nigeria’s national assembly shares this view as senate president, David Mark in a message lamented the challenges facing operations and democracy at that level.
On the part of the forum members however, while acknowledging the challenges at the local government level, emphasis the need for politicians to recognize democracy at the local level.
INEC and other development partners pledged more partnership to improve the process.
