National Youth Service Corps Scheme and Fake Corps Members

The National Youth Service Corps Scheme is backed by the decree No. 24 of 22nd May 1973.  The NYSC as it is known has as one of its primary purposes, to inculcate in  Nigerian Youths the spirit of selfless service to the community, and to emphasize the spirit of oneness and brotherhood of all Nigerians, irrespective of cultural or social background.

Unemployment, desperation, impatience and lack of sincerity as to an individual’s true position in a school system are enumerated as some of the factors compelling youths to fake NYSC  membership and certificates. Report indicates the last time fake corps members were arrested in Niger State was in 2012 in an external camp located opposite Bosso campus of the Federal University of Technology Minna.

However, the NYSC officials believes that faking the call up letter and mobilization exercise is an externally generated ploy masterminded by the culprit who are either school drop outs, impatient to wait for their time or have not fulfilled the necessary requirements of graduation from their various school to qualify for the scheme, hence propelling their connivance with cohorts of  like minds to counterfeit the scheme.

The Niger State NYSC secretariat also debunked as false and misconstrued the publications made in some newspapers, alleging that about 200 fake corps members were discovered in 2014 batch B orientation course.

Stakeholders who are of the opinion that the National youth Service Corp is a dynamic scheme and key to national integration said the consequences of faking it will be adverse on the scheme if not checked.

They opined that adequate measures should be put in place by all organizations to check counterfeit certificate by refereeing them back to their institutions of origin for verification
