NNRA Workshop on Ionizing Radiation

Stakeholders in the diagnostic and interventional radiology practice in the country have been enjoined to adhere strictly to the international safety standards in the use of ionizing radiation facilities. The Acting Director General of the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority, NNRA, Dr. Martin Ogharandukun gave the advice at a workshop organized for diagnostic and International Radiology Practice in the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Abuja.

Ionizing radiation is said to have many beneficial health applications in man is both diagnostic and therapy if it is justified, close limit observed and the exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable. The Acting DG NNRA, Dr. Martin Ogharandukun, says because of the inherent risks on the handlers, the patients and the public, stakeholders are brought together to talk openly on radiation protection.

Representatives of the National Hospital, Abuja Clinic and other hospitals in the FCT all commended the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority for ensuring standards saying regulation is the only way forward.

The participants saw the workshop is a welcome development. The Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority, NNRA, was established in 2011 by the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act, 1995 with the responsbility for nuclear safety and radiological protection regulation in Nigeria.
