Senate President Gives Hope on State Creation
Senate President David Mark told the Monarchs from Delta North that State creation is desirable to not only meet the needs of agitators for a sense of belonging, but to promote healthy competition among the Federating States as well as guarantee peace and security in the land. The Asagba of Asaba Prof. Chike Edozien made a case for Anioma State for the people of Delta North in the spirit of fairness and equity.
In the meantime, at Thursdays plenary, Senator Atai Aidoko Ati from Kogi State in a matter of urgent public importance opened the session of the Senate to the renewed violence in Odeke and Echemo communities of Ibaji Local Govt Area of Kogi State as a result of the rising tension over oil resources with their neighbours in Anambra State. He said 6 people have already lost their lives. The Senate resolved to discuss the matter on Tuesday next week. However, two bills emanating from the House of Representatives passed second reading. They include those for the establishment of the National Alternative Dispute Resolution Regulatory Commission as well as the Office of the Nigerian Financial Umbudsman for Resolving Financial and Related Disputes in the Nation’s Financial Services Sector. The bills were referred to the Committees on Judiciary as well as Banking for further Legislative action.
And array from plenary, the Senate Committee on Education headed by Senator Uche Chuwumerige took on the Minister of State for Education and the Registrars to JAMB and NECO over reports that the two examination bodies may have been scrapped. The Minister and the Chief Executives of the organisations told the Committee that the examination bodies are still intact as the Federal Government is yet to take any decision on the offer.
