SEMA Tasks LG Chairmen in Kebbi on Documentation of Disasters
The Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency(SEMA) has tasked Local Government Chairmen in Kebbi State on proper documentation of areas affected by natural disasters in their domains.
The Chairman of the agency, Alhaji Sani Dododo said this on Friday during a meeting with chairmen of the 21 Local Government Councils in Birnin Kebbi.
Dododo expressed concern over the lukewarm attitude of some council in documenting disasters in their areas.
He said that natural disasters like flooding, soil erosion and windstorm usually caused havoc on communities across the state.
“There is need for Chairmen to ensure proper documentation of areas prone to those disaster and the most affected areas to make it easy for both the State and Federal Agencies to take relief materials.”
He said that experts from the ecological section of the NEMA would soon be in the state to assess the extent of assistance required by the disaster affected areas.
Earlier, the State Commissioner for Environment and Solid Mineral, Alhaji Muhammed Marafa said the easiest way to prevent soil disaster like soil erosion was to plant shrubs and grass to prevent the soil from washing away.
Marafa also called on the Chairmen to enlighten the people about the effects of soil erosion. (NAN)
