The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kebbi State, on Thursday launched a programme to provide free medical services for the people of Felande village, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi.

The NYSC began the free service involving medical checks and treatment for the community under its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme.

The state Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Lawal Turawa, said the programme was aimed at providing free medical services for more than 500 underprivileged persons in the community.

Turawa explained that there were competent doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health personnel among the corps members who were willing to render free medical services to the needy.

“In order to bridge the gap of lack of adequate healthcare in rural communities, NYSC decided to introduce this Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers.

“We have the personnel; doctors, nurses and other health workers who can tackle the health challenges of these people,’’ he said.

He said that the drugs and other health facilities were being donated by corporate bodies and private individuals, adding that any case that could not be handled by the volunteer corps members would be referred to the appropriate hospital.

The team leader of the corps members volunteer group Umuwe Patrick told journalists at the event that the team was fully prepared for the task ahead.

Responding on behalf of Felande people, the Village Head, Alhaji Abubakar Felande, who commended the NYSC for the initiative, expressed gratitude for the gesture and pledged the community’s support for the programme. (NAN)
