The Yobe Government, on Friday, in Fune, Yobe, inaugurated three boreholes and water points to feed livestock along 125km cattle route, demarcated from Damaturu to Dazigau village in the state.

Alhaji Mustapha Gajerema, the Commissioner for Agriculture, said the water points were provided along the demarcated cattle routes to avoid trespass into farmlands by the animals and herdsmen in search of water.

“This is in continuation of the efforts of Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam administration to provide sustainable solutions to the conflicts between crop and livestock farmers in the state.

“The State Government has demarcated cattle routes, provided water points for both human and animal use, free vaccination for the livestock and food supplement to boost livestock production in the state,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the water points were constructed in Alakwaya, Zoto and Dazigau villages bordering Bauchi.

Gajerema cautioned farmers against cultivating on the cattle routes; saying that “government will not tolerate deliberate attempts to undermine its efforts towards peaceful co-existence among farmers and grazers.

The commissioner warned against farming on the cattle routes and also called on grazers to use the demarcated routes for movement of their livestock.

Dr Mustapha Abba, the Manager, Yobe Pilot Livestock Development Project, said the water points were provided at strategic locations for the animals to have easy access to water.

“Drinking points have been provided for cattle and small ruminants like sheep and goats for easy use by the pastoralists,”Abba said.

He urged the benefiting communities to imbibe a good management culture for optimal utilisation of the facilities.

The manager said that vaccines had been procured for mass vaccination and routine treatment of livestock in zonal and area veterinary clinics in the state.

“The project has also developed pilot animal feed plantations for transfer to individual farms so as to boost animal feeds in the state”.  (NAN)
