Abuja-Kaduna Train Ride – The Experience
When the Federal Government signed MOU with the Chinese in 2014 to develop another segment of the Abuja-Kaduna rail, it sounded very much like the countless MOUs. The type of MOUs government is always ‘signing’ without real impact on the populace, alas few would have foreseen such really changing economic situation of ordinary Nigerians. This particular MOUs became a subject of national pride – Nigerians comparing our rails with the Ethiopians was a trending subject in November.
In 2006, the government contracted with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation to build the Lagos–Kano Standard Gauge Railway. It was later decided to complete the project in segments due to resource scarcity. After many delays, the segment from Abuja to Kaduna (187 km) opened officially on 26 July 2016. Other segments have not yet begun construction.
