NEMA holds Conference On Gender And Disaster Risk Management
Experts in disaster management are brainstorming in Abuja to come up with a policy guide for mainstreaming gender in disaster management in Nigeria. The two day event organized by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA has participants mostly women from across the country.
Nigeria still grapples with the devastating effects of insecurity as it affects livelihood of the people, impacted on the economy of states and negatively affecting social relationship among families.
Latest statistics from NEMA show that out of about two point one million internally displaced persons, fifty three percent are female.
The National stakeholders conference on gender and disaster risk management is therefore aimed at coming out with a policy frame work on gender sensitive disaster management.
Government representatives, development partners as well as donor agencies want relevant authorities to key into the initiative such as this and formulate policies and programs that will guarantee security of women who are said to be worst hit.
They described the forum as appropriate as it will add value to various efforts to sustain peace, and equip women on disaster preparedness and enable better understanding of gender based vulnerability in the context of emergencies.
