It is about time NTA overhauled its network. NTA’s national news production is stuck in the past from heavy-tongued and timid news readers to lacklustre editing and vision graphics that is a little more than PowerPoint. All over Africa, state run network television have undergone a massive shift in keeping with the information age. From Rwanda to Ghana, South Africa to Ethiopia, they make a great song and dance of their exploits in this field. It is just unfathomable that with Nigeria’s rich mix of technical and artistic talents, we cannot showcase comparable news bulletins and even match the best Europe and the Americas can offer.
The solution may be radical but inevitable – engage an outward looking team to manage NTA. Sidestep the bureaucrats and get rid of all these broadcasters who are starring middle age in the face from our screens. Retire them to the back room offices where their experience will be invaluable. Replace them with fresh faces! Embark on a talent hunt in colleges and universities; there are thousands of success-hungry youngsters waiting to explode on the scene, whose only breakthrough is opportunity. Of course Nigerians are interested in what is happening around them, be it in politics, entertainment, technology or sports, and television in internet revolution is an economic mine and just about the right medium to get through to them, it is a win-win. Whether the NTA as an instrument of government is doing enough to keep them engaged is an open debate. I am however not persuaded, at least just yet.
