Review and Update of Nigeria National Water Resources Master Plan
The Nigerian Government through the ministry of water resources is working towards ensuring an efficient water resource management in the country.
This it intends to achieve in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) an organ of the Japanese government.
Ngozi chude reports that this initiative has kicked off with the presentation of a review and an update of Nigeria National Water Resources master plan in Abuja.
The beginning of a new era in the water sector of Nigeria as the Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Ochekpe receives a review of an integrated master plan on Water Resource Management from Japan (JICA) 15 years after the development of the first master plan.
A step these stakeholders say is imperative for Nigeria with its increase in population and water demand, as well as globalization, climate change and other water related activities that have altered things drastically over the years.
Among several factors they say prevented effective implementation of the first plan was insufficient capacity of officers in charge, weak co-ordination mechanism and absence of strong leadership.
All these, the ministry is determined to overcome.
With such renewed vigor in the water sector, the issue of mismanagement and waste might just be a thing of the past.
